Kid stand up to Westboro Baptist Church
Sometimes it's important to get a little good news.
A 9-year-old, tired of the hate being spewed by the Westboro Baptist Church, decided to display his own sign. It was small. It was handwritten. But it packed a punch.
The boys mother posted the photo of her son on Facebook and wrote: “After our walk around Washburn campus, we ran into the Phelps… Josef was determined to make his own statement so we went to the car and with pencil and his sketch pad, he made up his own little sign that reads “GOD HATES NO ONE”.
“I have never been prouder. Those people are scary but he stood strong, was respectful and stood by his convictions. He will be a good man, I have no doubt.”
“I stood up to the Westboro Baptist Church and there are some things I want to say about it," Josef explained. "One, why I did it: I hate those signs, I hate them and I want to stop them. Two, the way I feel about it is that I can do anything if you let me. And three, we should all respect each other, even if our ideas are not the same.”
There is hope for future generations!

Four gay men to be hanged in Iran
Iranian officials have once again struck a blow to human rights, allegedly sentencing four young men to death for sodomy.
The Human Rights Activist News Agency in Iran stated that the men, Saadat Arefi, Vahid Akbari, Javid Akbari, and Houshmand Akbari, were to be executed soon. They will be hanged as prescribed by Shari’a law, with the government acting quickly in order to limit international objections.
"Being gay is not a crime based on Iranian criminal law," said one activist, "but this is the most clear statement against same-sex acts in past months."
Five other men have been hanged for homosexuality this year, although the charges are not always related to sexuality.
A recent report about Iran indicated that life for the LGBT community was extremely difficult.
"LGBT Iranians are routinely harassed both by society and by the state," the group Small Media and UK-based gay activist Peter Tatchell explained in a joint statement. "Many have been physically tortured and punished and some have been sentenced to death solely because of their sexual orientation.
"One of the few ways LGBT Iranians can express their true selves, find valuable information about sexuality, health and identity, and build a sense of community is through the internet, the use of which is also inherently dangerous in the Islamic Republic of Iran."
It is an important reminder that having gay rights where we live is not enough, as so many people around the world still need our support.

Ending conversion therapy in California
California politicians are considering a ban on 'conversion' therapy for gay and lesbian teens. The bill, introduced by Democratic State Sen. Ted Lieu, passed its final committee vote last week.
If the bill becomes law, psychologists would be prohibited from trying to turn young gays and lesbians straight. Adults could still receive 'conversion' therapy, but would be required to sign a consent form.
"This therapy can be dangerous," Lieu said, pointing out that conversion therapy does not work. Worse, he pointed out, it can cause depression and lead to suicide.
Clinton W. Anderson from the American Psychological Association said the bill was important. "Because APA doesn't see same-sex sexual orientation as being in any essential way different from other sexual orientations, we do not believe there is any psychological reason why people should change, and we believe those individuals and organizations that still promote such therapy or other methods of change are contributing to a negative social climate for lesbian, gay, and bisexual people, especially young people."
Ex-gay groups spoke out against the legislation.
"We can look at other organizations who help people dealing with other life struggles," Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, said. "For instance, Weight Watchers, which has tremendously benefited my life. Should we go after Weight Watchers and tell them, 'Don't say that there's anything beyond obesity,' for people who are struggling with obesity and want an alternative to that?"
"Being gay or lesbian is not a disorder," countered Martin Binks, clinical director and CEO of Binks Behavioral Therapy. "While at times people need therapy to better understand their sexuality and to assist them in considering issues of sexuality in the context of their lives, 'conversion' therapies, as the name implies, too often tend to start from a presumption that it is wrong to be gay and that the only goal is to change that; which is not a helpful therapeutic approach."
'Conversion' therapy is the modern equivalent of selling snake oil. It should have been banned a long tim ago!

Bristol Palin criticizes Obama over gay marriage
Bristol Palin took Barack Obama to task for not only supporting gay marriage this week, but also for allowing his daughters to influence his new position.
“There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently,” Obama said during his interview with ABC News. “It doesn’t make sense to them and, frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”
Bristol was aghast, criticizing the president for consulting his “teenage daughters” when making “a massive change in a policy position that could affect the entire nation.”
“I guess we can be glad that Malia and Sasha aren’t younger, or perhaps today’s press conference might have been about appointing Dora the Explorer as Attorney General because of her success in stopping Swiper the Fox,” Palin wrote on her blog.
“While it’s great to listen to your kids’ ideas, there’s also a time when dads simply need to be dads,” Palin said. The single mother added that the Obamas let their kids watch too much Glee, and that children were better off with a mom and a dad.
But it didn't take long for people to put the young Palin in her place. And you know something's wrong when Jersey Shore's JWoww comes off as smarter than you. "Bristol should keep her uneducated ignorant mouth shut. If ur living in the past u wouldn't have a kid w/out marriage #hypocrite. It's 2012!" JWoww tweeted.

Obama says 'I do (support gay marriage)'
Well, it finally happened: a sitting President announced that he supports gay marriage.
Barack Obama confirmed his new position during an interview with ABC News.
"At a certain point I've just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married," Obama said.
He once opposed same-sex marriage, then later admitted his views on the issue were "evolving."
"I had hesitated on gay marriage, in part, because I thought civil unions would be sufficient," the President said. "I was sensitive to the fact that - for a lot of people - that the word marriage is something that provokes very powerful traditions and religious beliefs."
A recent Gallup Poll shows that the US is almost evenly divided on the issue. 50% of those polled supported gay marriage rights, while 48% did not.
Mitt Romney, Obama's likely Republican contender for the White House later this year, reiterated that he was against gay marriage. And others said Obama was giving the GOP an early election gift with the announcement.
"This is an unanticipated gift to the Romney campaign. It is certain to fuel a record turnout of voters of faith to the polls this November," said Ralph Reed, founder and chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition.
Will this announcement make a difference in Obama's chances of winning his bid for a second term? We'll see on election day.

Politician comes out to stop 'don't say gay' bill
Politicians in Missouri are considering a bill that would prohibit teachers from talking about homosexuality with students, even if the student were looking for help with coming out of the closet. The 'Don't Say Gay' bill is currently being debated by the state's House of Representatives.
Republican Rep. Zachary Wyatt does not want the bill to pass. And to that end, he hoped that by coming out he could help influence some of his colleagues to reconsider their position on the new law.
“Today I ask you to stand with me as a proud Republican, a proud veteran, and a proud gay man who wants to protect all kids, addressing bullying in our schools,” Wyatt said on Wednesday.
“I will not lie to myself anymore about my own sexuality. It has probably been the hardest thing to come to terms with. I have always ignored it. I didn’t even think about it or want to talk about it. I’ve not been immune to it. I hear the comments, usually snide ones, about me,” Wyatt added.
He explained how he had been bullied as a child, and didn't want to support anything that would allow bullying to take place in schools.
“Students need to feel safe when they go to school and be able to speak to teachers, counselors, and administrators when they are getting bullied," he said. "This bill will make that illegal."
A similar bill was being considered in Tennessee. However, the bill's sponsor is not pushing for a vote on it which will allow the bill to die when the current legislative session ends.

Fighting porn 'Blair Witch' style

That certain people don't like porn is not surprising. It corrupts youth, after all. It gives people a warped sense of reality. It encourages promiscuity! It makes men touch themselves!
A Christian group recently created the video Harmless in its war against naked people fucking on camera.
"Harmless is a feature film shot in the popular found footage style," the filmmakers explained. "It’s the story about a husband and father and his battle with a box of porn that is found in the closet. Once opened, the box of porn begins to torment the family, much like a poltergeist. It’s sort of a social commentary on how pornography can destroy a family."
Of course, no one checked to see if the house was built on an ancient burial mound. No, it had to be the evil box of porn.
We can relate, though. Things pop up when we open our stash of porn, but we take things in hand until we're covered in ectoplasm!

Dan Savage upsets students with Bible comments
Dan Savage is not known for holding back, but several journalism students took issue with the sex advice columnist when he called out certain passages in the Bible as “bullshit” and the reason for homophobic bullying.
He was giving a lecture at the National High School Journalist Conference in Seattle. He said: “People often say that they can’t help with the anti-gay bullying acts because it says right there in Leviticus, it says right there in Timothy, it says right there in Romans, that being gay is wrong.
“We can learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible and what it says about gay people,” he said, pointing out that other passages in the Bible that seem to support slavery and prohibit the eating of shellfish are ignored.
Some students applauded the remarks. Several others left.
"Dan Savage should apologize for his comments and should apologize to the high school students in attendance whom he called ‘pansy-asses,’” argued Jimmy LaSalvia from GOProud. “It is ironic that someone whose claim to fame is fighting bullying would resort to bullying tactics in attacking high school students who were offended by his outrageous remarks.”
“It’s funny,” Savage said during the speech, “as someone who’s on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the bible, how pansy-assed some people react when you push back.”
Savage later apologised for hurting anyone during his speech, but refused to apologise for what he said.
Do you think Dan Savage crossed the line?
Anheuser-Busch versus the UFC
Anheuser-Busch, the company that owns Budwesier, is calling the Ultimate Fighting Championship out for homophobia, threatening to pull its advertising if the UFC doesn't change its ways. Bud Light is a major sponsor of the UFC's televised fights.
“We’ve communicated to the UFC our displeasure with certain remarks made by some of its fighters, and they have promised to address this," Anheuser-Busch said in a statement. "If the incidents continue, we will act.”
The company emphasized that it “embraces diversity and does not condone insensitive and derogatory comments rooted in ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, etc.”
Incidents that may have bothered Anheuser-Busch include fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson encouraging Japanese fans who do not speak English to repeat phrases including: “I’m a fag,” and UFC President Dana White calling a journalist's source a “pussy and a faggot” (for which White later apologized).
The UFC argued that most of its fighters are good men, and that only a few are guilty of such negative actions. “With over 425 athletes on our roster, there have unfortunately been instances where a couple athletes have made insensitive or inappropriate comments," the UFC said. "We don’t condone this behavior, and in no way is it reflective of the company or its values.”
You know money talks, and the UFC is likely to listen very closely to what Anheuser-Busch has to say.
Mitt Romney's gay advisor comes with wicked wit
It is pretty much a given that Mitt Romney will be leading the Republicans in this year's battle for the White House. And this means he needs to pull back from the far-right of the party if he hopes to be President.
Even so, when Romney - who signed NOM's pledge to fight gay marriage - named openly gay Richard Grenell as his national security and foreign policy spokesperson, it caught many people by surprise.
Blogger Andrew Sullivan saw the move as tremendously positive. ”For Romney to have an openly gay spokesman is a real outreach to gay Republicans, a subtle signal to moderates, and the Santorum faction’s reaction will be worth noting,” he said.
Others weren't so happy. Bryan Fischer of the designated hate-group American Family Association immediately denounced Grenell as an “out and loud gay,” claiming the appointment was a “message to the pro-family community” to “drop dead.”
Fischer later tweeted: “Romney’s gay hire would serve in his administration in national security… You want to tell me there’s no Secret Service-type risk here?” - implying that Grenell might soon be hosting gay escorts while on duty.
But Grenell's sexuality is quickly being overshadowed by some major baggage. He seems to suffer from Foot-in-Mouth Tweet Syndrome. Over 800 tweets were deleted from his account, but several, coming off as a slightly sexist, have been archived.
In the past, he tweeted that ”Hillary is starting to look like Madeleine Albright." and that Rachel Madow from MSNBC should “take a breath and wear a necklace.” He seemed particularly interested in Newt Gingrich's wife once asking ”Do you think Callista [Gingrich]’s hair snaps on?” and questioned if she could even speak.
Funny? Harmless? Perhaps. Except when you've become part of a campaign to elect the next President. Maddow wondered whether ”a long string of really nasty, sexist tweets about Callista Gingrich’s appearance might be alienating to people who might otherwise consider voting for Mr. Romney.” Good question.
"My personal twitter feed was written before I joined the Romney campaign," Grenell said in a statement. "Some tweets were meant to be tongue-in-cheek and humorous. Regrettably, I can now see how they can also be hurtful. I didn't mean them that way and removed them from Twitter. I sincerely apologize for any hurt they caused."
We can only guess at some of the choice insults contained in those 800 deleted tweets. Perhaps more than could be dismissed with a simple apology.

Pope: nuns not judging others enough
The Vatican has launched a crackdown on the umbrella group that represents most of America’s 55,000 Catholic nuns - the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) - saying that the group does not speak out strongly enough against gay marriage, abortion and women’s ordination.
Throughout the history of the Catholic church, women - who are banned from being preists because the haven't got penises - have taken vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and have directed their work toward charitable and educational causes such as running schools, hospitals, orphanages and a range of social services.
That's not enough, according to the Vatican. The Pope wants American nuns to focus more on telling people how sinful they are. The eight page report states that issues like “the church’s biblical view of family life and human sexuality, are not part of the LCWR agenda in a way that promotes church teaching."
Meanwhile, in Seattle, the congregation at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church gave the Rev. Tim Clark a standing ovation last Sunday when he announced that the parish would not gather signatures for a referendum to repeal same-sex marriage.
Time for the Pope to kick some Seattle ass.
As a humble retort to His Holiness, we respectfully present the latest educational video from FCKH8T:
